Frequently Asked Questions
-
Yes, and Yes! I tutor both in-person at my location in Sacramento, CA and online.
-
I use the Barton Reading and Spelling program which is an Orton-Gillingham based reading intervention for struggling readers and those with Dyslexia. It’s multi sensory, systematic and explicit.
What does this mean? It means I use teaching tools that are multisensory (sight, sound and touch). We learn to decode words and spell systematically. For example, how do you know if the vowel is long or short when you are sounding out a word? There is a rule for that!
I also use the Foundations in Sounds curriculum if students need help with phonemic awareness prior to starting Barton.
-
Yes! I received my Advanced Certification from Susan Barton herself!
-
Yes! I see kids as young as 6 and up to adults. Each leaner brings their own unique skills and challenges and my goal is always to meet them where they are and teach them the skills and tools to improve their reading and spelling!
-
I focus on making a personal connection with my students, establishing a strategy that will work best for each individual learner. I utilize games as a fun way to reinforce concepts, and fidgets to help students focus, while also embracing different types of learning styles.
-
I see students a minimum of two times a week, which is recommended for any Orton-Gillingham based reading program. Sessions are 45 minutes long.
-
I work with struggling readers of many varieties. Some have suspected or diagnosed dyslexia and some do not! Barton is an Orton Gillingham based reading intervention suitable for many types of readers.
-
Yes! I’m currently a vendor with Visions in Education, Forest Charter School and Clarksville Charter School. I’m always open to becoming a vendor for additional Charter Schools to help out a current student.
-
I see students starting at 7am and throughout the school day, as well as a few days a week afterschool. Availability depends on my current student list.

Testimonials
Our daughter has become a strong and proud reader!
“Working with Courtney has been a true gift for our family. My daughter has dyslexia and ADHD and has been meeting with Courtney twice a week for the past two years. The growth we’ve seen has been incredible!. The progress she’s made has helped her academically, and given her so much more confidence. Courtney understands how to make learning fun and meaningful. Despite early morning sessions, my daughter has never once complained — she genuinely looks forward to her time with Courtney.
What stands out most is how Courtney celebrates my daughter’s strengths and always reminds her of her gifts. We are so grateful — she has helped our daughter become a strong and proud reader!”

My son feared he would never learn to read…
“It is heartbreaking to watch your child struggle to learn to read. As a homeschooling family, we tried over a dozen reading curricula and strategies to no avail. I watched as my children shrank, feeling broken and defeated. Struggling to read affected their spirits as much as their academics.
When we met Courtney, my 11-year-old son could not read; his brain struggled to decode the sounds each letter makes. My 13-year-old daughter could read, but she could not sound out words. She had learned to memorize how each word looked, allowing her to read but not spell. Two different challenges under the umbrella of dyslexia. Courtney helped both children.
Yes, Courtney teaches each student how to read and spell, but just as importantly, she gives them confidence, cheers them on, celebrates their wins, and encourages them through their challenges! This combination is invaluable. Shortly after starting tutoring with Courtney, my son came to me with tears in his eyes and said, “Mom, I thought I’d never learn how to read.” He didn’t think it was possible. Now he reads well, may spell better than I do, and walks taller.
Thank you, Courtney!”

Monumental reading progress
“We were very fortunate to get a spot with Courtney. Barton (tutoring) is not a cheap or quick fix but it is thorough and Courtney delivers the program with patience, diligence and fun. The change in our son’s reading ability has been monumental. He now enjoys school because he can understand questions without struggling to read them. We are so grateful that we were able to give our son the opportunity to spend this time in a safe environment to develop his reading and we would do it all over again if we needed to.
We will always be grateful for the work Courtney has done with him. Can’t recommend her enough. She’s brilliant!”

A worthwhile investment with lasting results…
“From a young age we knew my son needed help with his reading. Spelling tests were horrible and reading worksheets were extremely challenging and made school miserable. Due to his dyslexia, he needed one-on-one tutoring, using a structured program to teach phonemic awareness and phonics. Courtney has a gift for being able to be kind and firm. She knows how to connect with her students, meet them where they are at and keep them engaged with difficult content. Through a lot of hard work my son finished the Barton program reading at a 9th grade reading level! Investing the time and effort into reading tutoring was so worth it to give my son confidence and help him be academically successful.
Whenever I have friends whose kids are struggling at school, I encourage them to contact Courtney. And now the principal from my son’s K-8 school is also sending students to Courtney because she’s seen how helpful it has been for students.
